Radiation in Everyday Life
Understanding Radiation
Nature's Energy and Our Everyday Exposure
We are exposed to radiation from many sources every day, such as cosmic radiation from space, natural radioactivity in rocks and soil, and even from food and water. However, most of the radiation we are exposed to is low-level and not considered harmful.
Radiation is the transfer of energy in the form of particles or waves. It can occur naturally, such as from the sun or from radioactive materials in the earth's crust, or it can be man-made, such as in medical procedures or from nuclear power plants.
Medical imaging procedures, such as X-rays and CT scans, also expose us to radiation, but the benefits generally outweigh the risks.
On the other hand, exposure to high levels of radiation can be dangerous and cause harm to our bodies. That's why precautions are taken to limit exposure in certain situations, such as when handling radioactive materials.
